About Thirsk

if you fancy a day at the races, Thirsk is the perfect place for you. A beautiful market town in the heart of North Yorkshire, Thirsk is a thriving community that stays well connected to both city life and the beautiful nature Yorkshire has to offer.

Thirsk lies in the Vale of Mowbray, 24 miles north of York and 8 miles south-south east of the county town of Northallerton. However, Thirsk is well connected by the nearby A1 motorway giving easy access to York, Durham and Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park lies just to the west of Thirsk providing an escape from the busy life of the towns and cities. If you love animals then you’ll be pleased to know that Thirsk was home to veterinary surgeon and author James Herriot. The World of James Herriot museum was built within Thirsk and dedicated to Herriot’s life and works.

The Television programme “All Creatures Great and Small” was also influenced by the books of James Herriot.

Thirsk market offers local goods every Monday and Saturday in the market place. A fun fact about Thirsk is that the market square adjacent to the clock tower was featured in the artwork to Pulp‘s number 1, 1995 album,  Different Class.
