About Selby

The market town of Selby sits 12 miles south of the city of York. This Yorkshire town offers everything you would want from a North Yorkshire market town from bars, cafes shops and architecture. Selby is home to one of the most superb Abbey churches to be found anywhere in England. The Abbey is not just a building it is a living and vibrant part of the local community yet provides space that allow the visitor and the worshiper alike to find peace, tranquillity and the very presence of God. The famous and beautiful Selby Abbey, sitting proudly in the centre of the town, has stood for nearly 1000 years dating from around 1069.

Industry has been a large influence on the town over the years, from mining, manufacturing and at its peak was a leading ship building town in Yorkshire. The Selby Canal brought in goods from the nearby large city of Leeds. Selby’s origins date back to a Viking settlement on the River Ouse, still a prominent part of the town. It is the birthplace of King Henry I, fourth son of William the Conqueror, in 1068/69. With a population 14000 double that of neighbouring town Tadcaster, Selby is the Districts Council town, Selby District Council. Home to Selby Town FC they play in the Northern Counties East Football League. Selby is a well-connected Town which is near York, Leeds and Goole, Howden and Hull can be reached on the nearby M62 Motorway.
