About Northallerton

Northallerton is a North Yorkshire market town sitting in the Vale of York. Firstly, the North Yorkshire County Council are lucky enough to call Northallerton their Home! As a result, they work from the beautiful Northallerton County Hall, built in 1906 on part of the old racecourse. Secondly, they get to work in a truly magnificent and historical building.

When considering locations for a town, Northallerton is one of the best.  Sitting between the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors National Parks, Northallerton is beautifully connected to amazing countryside surroundings.  However, Northallerton provides the best of both worlds sitting on the Great North Road which runs from London to Edinburgh.

Northallerton Shops with a hint of prison!

Northallerton’s wide High Street is a pleasant busy shopping centre, with many independent shops, cafes and pubs. Furthermore, there is a busy market on Wednesday and Saturday and free Wi-Fi helping shoppers stay connected. However, not all visitors came for the shopping and cafés.

HM Prison Northallerton was a prison in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. It operated from 1788 until December 2013. During that time, it housed male and female adult prisoners, women with children, youth offenders, and military prisoners. In later years Her Majesty’s Prison Service struggled to keep the old prison operating to modern standards. Consequently, and after citing the costs of doing so and the relatively small size of the institution, it closed the prison in 2014. Subsequently, the prison was bought by Hambleton District Council, which plans to redevelop the site with new homes, shops and facilities for the community to enjoy.
