About Wigan

Wigan is a town in Greater Manchester that sits around 17 miles northwest of Manchester. An important town in the Industrial Revolution that has the Wigan Pier on the Liverpool to Leeds Canal.

There are records showing that there was a coal mine in Wigan back in 1450, so Wigan is no stranger to industry.  At its peak, there were 1,000 pit shafts within 5 miles of the town centre. Mining was in fact so extensive that a town councillor remarked that “a coal mine in the backyard was not uncommon in Wigan”. However as with many northern towns, Coal mining ceased during the latter part of the 20th century.

In 1999 both Wigan Athletic Football team and the Wigan Warriors Rugby League team moved into the new 25,000 capacity stadium, currently called the DW stadium.

Wigan is also home to the world famous 1990’s band, The Verve who met at Winstanley College. Furthermore, Singer songwriter George Formby, OBE was born in Wigan and went on to become a national treasure.
