About Manchester

The city of Manchester sits at the heart of the Greater Manchester borough and is the United Kingdoms third most populated area. Manchester dates back to roman times showing a settlement as Mamucium or Mancunium. Manchester was given City status in the year 1853 following an astonishing rate of growth due to the expansion of urbanisation due to the textiles manufacturing boom and industry.  As a result, Manchester became the worlds first industrialised city. The Manchester Ship Canal opened in 1894, creating the Port of Manchester and directly linking the city to the Irish Sea and the rest of the world. De-industrialisation following the second world war meant that the vast fortune of Manchester and its textiles industrial factories faced a rapid decline.

Some interesting facts about Manchester include world firsts. Manchester is home to the worlds first inter city railway line and station, connecting Manchester directly to Liverpool by passenger rail. Furthermore, The University of Manchester, in 1917, saw the scientist, Ernest Rutherford, first split the atom. Then, in 1948, Frederic C. Williams, Tom Kilburn and Geoff Tootill developed and built the world’s first stored-program computer.

Manchester is of course home to two of the worlds biggest football teams. Manchester United famously managed by Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester City, who in recent times have enjoyed success under new ownership.

Manchester is the biggest northern city and is connected to all corners of the UK by Air and road, including the M62, M60 and M6 motorways. Many famous bands originate from Manchester such as Oasis, The Charlatans, The Smiths, Happy Mondays, Take That and The Stone Roses to name a few.
