About Pontefract

The old West Yorkshire town of Pontefract has some splendid architecture dating back hundreds of years. In addition, Pontefract Castle ruins are and intriguing and an educational attraction offering, and any visitor to the Pontefract castle will enjoy a visit.  Pontefract castle dates back to 1070 and was constructed by Ilbert de Lacy . Permission to do this had been granted to him by William the Conqueror as a reward for his support during the Norman Conquest. Initially the castle was a wooden structure which was replaced with stone over time. The Domesday Survey of 1086 recorded “Ilbert’s Castle” which probably referred to Pontefract Castle. In later times Pontefract became a mining town and grew significantly with workers in the many local coal pit mines.

The last deep coal mine to shut was Kellingley Colliery, 5 miles from Pontefract which closed on 18th December 2015.

Pontefract is famous for its food and sweets too, and include the Pontefract cake liquorice sweets and the household brand Haribo.

Pontefract is well connected to local towns such as Castleford, Knottingley, Leeds and the motorway network with the M62 and A1 passing by the town.  Shopping is well catered for with the Excape entertainment complex and Junction 32 shopping centre on the outskirts of Pontefract too. Throw in a day at the races at Pontefract Racecourse and you are spoilt for choice of things to do in this old West Yorkshire town.
