About Pocklington

Pocklington sits between Hull and York on the A1079. It sits at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, a beautiful piece of countryside often overlooked by those in search of some open space to enjoy. Pocklingtons inhabitation as a site is thought to extend back thousands of years to the Bronze Age. Furthermore, Pocklington appears on the 14th century Gough Map, the oldest route map in Great Britain.

By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Pocklington had come to prominence and was the second largest settlement in Yorkshire after York itself. It developed through the Middle Ages while many similar places fell into dramatic decline. Pocklington did in fact owe much of its prosperity in the Middle Ages to the fact that it was a local centre for the trading of wool. It lay on the main road to York which was an important national centre for the export of wool to the continent. Wool was England’s main export in the earlier Middle Ages.

Moving forward to the present day, Pocklington is a growing town with the development of new homes being built and has a busy market town centre full of the amenities you would come to expect from a thriving community. The Yorkshire Wolds is home to the Wolds Way and David Hockney has featured the Yorkshire Wolds in many of his paintings.
