About Chippenham

The market town of Chippenham is one of the West Country’s most vibrant towns. Located on the banks of the River Avon and a just over an hour’s commute from central London by train, Chippenham offers an ideal centre for relaxation and exploration of rural Wiltshire, Bath and the Cotswolds. Chippenham is just 4 miles south of the M4 and on the great western railway line from London Paddington to Bristol and just 10 minutes by train to Bath spa train station.

The expansion of Chippenham began towards the end of the 18th century. In 1800 the Wilts and Berks Canal reached Chippenham and a wharf was constructed after a dispute when the Chippenham branch originally ended short of the town in 1798. The canal branch was officially opened on 10th Sept 1810 allowing the town access to trades in Bristol and London. This led to the expansion of the Cloth industry. Cheap coal could now be brought to the town to power the steam factories that were being built. This also helped to bring materials to build the Great Western Railway line from London to Bristol 1841. In 1848 the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth Railway connected the town with Trowbridge and Westbury. The construction of the railway and the access it provided to raw materials and markets brought a new range of industries to Chippenham.

Only 2 factories were built in the town. The Bridge Factory sometime after 1796 and Waterford Mill. In 1811 four other smaller factories, three with dye houses. Chippenham was at a disadvantage to towns further south as the extra distance that coal, for the steam engines, had to be transported by canal added 10% to the cost. Engineering and other industries over took the cloth industry and although the industry survived in the town until 1930 it never dominated the economy, similar to Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge. Two other mills were used for the production of silk and these were next to the Neeld Hall and in Wood Lane.

Today Chippenham is still very much market town, with markets taking place main retail area surrounds the pedestrianised High Street and Market Place every Friday and Saturday with a local Farmers market every fortnight. Two shopping centres lie on either side of the High Street: the enclosed Emery Gate Shopping Centre and the open-air Borough Parade. You will also find your usual high street shops as well as a few independent shops selling quirky things you might not usually find.

Chippenham is surrounded by stone-built villages and the film makers’ favourites of Lacock (National Trust), Biddestone and Castle Combe which have featured in such film and TV dramas such as; Harry Potter, Cranford, Pride & Prejudice, The Christmas Candle, The Wolfman, War Horse, Stardust, Larkrise to Candleford, Dr Dolittle and Poirot.

Just a short drive from Chippenham is Bowood House and gardens. Where you can discover the rich and fascinating history of Bowood House and the Lansdowne family, set within 100 acres of beautifully landscaped ‘Capability’ Brown Parkland. Surrounding the Georgian House is the Italian-inspired Terrace Garden, the Private Walled Gardens and the herbaceous border, all radiating colour throughout the seasons. Children will love with the Adventure Playground featuring a life size pirate ship and a soft play area for the younger children to play so you can relax. You can also book a room at the hotel, where they provide spa treatments and a golf course nearby.
