About Amesbury
The Wiltshire town of Amesbury is located in southern Wiltshire, Approximately 7 miles (11 km) to north-northeast of Salisbury on the A345. Amesbury sits in the River Avon valley on the southern edges of Salisbury Plain and has historically been considered an important river crossing area on the road from London to Warminster and Exeter. This has continued into the present day with the building of the A303 across the river Avon next to the town. Originally the town was constructed around the water meadows next to several bends in the river Avon, but over time has spread onto the valley hillsides and absorbed part of the military airfield at Boscombe Down.
Recent discoveries at Blick Mead, near Vespasian’s Camp, including worked flints, bones from the aurochs and other animals, has made it clear that man has lived at Amesbury area for more than 8000 years. The Mesolithic base camp, identified by the Open University staff and students has made Amesbury the oldest continuously occupied place in Britain.
Amesbury has free parking, two coach spaces and its own weekly market. Visit the museum housing one of Britain’s largest Mesolithic collection. There are hotels, bed and breakfasts, an array of independent shops, restaurants and inns – the town is a great stop off point for travellers and visitors to Stonehenge and south Wiltshire.
To the south of the town lies Archers Gate, named after the Amesbury Archer who was found near there. A sculpture depicting the Archer stands in the arcade at Archers Gate and an incredible town mosaic can be seen, telling the story of Amesbury. The town offers many great walks both in the Stonehenge Landscape and close to the River Avon At Solstice Park you can find a large sculpture of the mighty Ancestor, which represents 10,000 years of life in the town.
On 30 June 2018, Amesbury hit the news when two British nationals were poisoned using Novichok nerve agents before being found unconscious at a property in Amesbury. The poisonings are currently under further investigation. Almost four months prior to the Amesbury attack, this was the same nerve agents that were used in the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in nearby Salisbury.
