About Warrington

Warrington sits between Liverpool and Manchester, some 20 miles from each city on the M6 motorway in the North West of England. Warrington is the largest town in Cheshire and became a ‘new town’ in 1968 when large scale development doubled the town population. Warrington was founded by the Romans at an important crossing place on the River Mersey. It continued as a major crossing point on the River Mersey since ancient times through the Roman settlement era and then onto the industrial revolution when the River Mersey became navigable.

Rather interestingly, Warrington was where Swedish home products retailer IKEA opened its first British store in the Burtonwood area of the town. Rugby league is Warrington’s premier sport in the form of Warrington Wolves, who were historically nicknamed “The Wire” because of Warrington’s history of wire making. In 2003 the club moved into their new home and moved to the Halliwell Jones Stadium. Warrington RLFC are the only team to have played every season in the top flight of rugby league.

Warrington is or has been home to many well known politicians, musicians, authors, actors and sports personalities. Some names include, George Formby, who is now buried in Warrington Cemetery. Also, Sue Johnston, the actress starred in the Royle Family and Hollywood actor Pete Postlethwaite. There is also business man and record producer Pete Waterman, Radio DJ Chris Evans, and singer with the Stone Roses, Ian Brown.

Warrington is a well connected town sitting at the heart of the North West of England with rail, road and John Lennon Airport nearby.
