About Tadcaster

Set on the river Wharfe in the Wharfe valley, Tadcaster is an old Market town and is probably best known and famous for brewing beer than supplying drinking water.  Home to three breweries, Heineken, which took over John Smiths Brewery, Coors and Samuel Smiths Brewery.  Samuel Smiths is the oldest Brewery in England dated 1758 and is still independently owned.  Being home to such international companies, Tadcaster is well placed on the Map. Tadcaster comes from an ancient Roman settlement which was named Calcaria. St. Marys Church sites proudly on the Riverbank in the centre of the town. The church was originally built in 1150, St Mary’s Church has been rebuilt twice – once after being burnt by Scots in 1318 and then taken down and rebuilt 5 feet higher, stone by stone, in 1857 to avoid flood damage.

  • Tadcaster is home to Tadcaster Albion AFC, a semi professional football club who are looking to progress up the football league structure.
  • Its has had in operation in recent times four Limestone Quarries, some of which supplied limestone to important buildings such as York Minster.
  • Tadcaster is home to the ‘Ark’ building, This timber framed house was built in the late 15th century. It was altered in the early 17th century and has impressive carvings of two heads on the front of the building. These are thought to represent the heads of Noah and his wife, hence the name. Throughout its life, the Ark has been a meeting place.
  • It is where the Pilgrim Fathers reputedly met to plan their voyage to America. An exact replica of the building exists in Ohio, USA.
