About Rotherham

The South Yorkshire town of Rotherham is a minster town which together with its conurbation and outlying settlements to the north, south and south-east forms the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. It has a recorded population of 257,000 according to the  2011 census. Historically, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, its central area is on the banks of the River Don below its confluence with the Rother on the traditional road between Sheffield and Doncaster.

Rotherham was well known as a coal mining town as well as a major contributor to the steel industry. Traditional industries included glass making and flour milling. In the early Industrial Revolution major uses of iron demanded good local ore and established processing skills for iron strength, qualities found in Rotherham’s smelting plants and foundries. Iron, and later steel, became the principal industry in Rotherham, surviving into the 20th century.

Rotherham United plays in the lower leagues of England. The team currently plays at the New York Stadium, a newly built stadium in the town.  For such a small town Rotherham has a long list of famous names that call the South Yorkshire town home. Some of these include footballs ex Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman, and former professional referee Howard Webb, Actor Sean Bean, politician William Hague and former BBC Top Gear presenter James May.  Rotherham can boast about more famous names, but these will do for now. The walk along the banks of the river Don runs though the town and a visit to the Magna Science Adventure Centre, an interactive science and adventure centre built in a former steel works in Templeborough, has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region.
