About Preston

Sitting in Lancashire in the north west of England, Preston was given city status in 2002 to become England’s 50th city in the 50th year of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. Preston’s name is derived from the Old English meaning “priest’s settlement” and of course like most places in England was a Roman settlement.  Preston sits on the river Ribble.

Preston is the seat of Lancashire County Council, houses the main campus of the University of Central Lancashire and is home to Preston North End Football Club, a founder member of the Football League and the first English football champions.

Sitting on the M6 motorway Preston is very well located and in easy reach of Manchester and the Lake District. On the coast is Blackpool which is easily accessible via the M55 motorway. Preston is home to some famous and notable people such as cricketer Andrew Flintoff, Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and A.J Hartley, award-winning, bestselling novelist to name just a few. Preston city centre offers a now vibrant city centre with shopping, cafes and bars a plenty.
